Respondents as young as nine identified the possible heath and safety disadvantages of having a mobile phone, with answers including the risk of the phones being stolen and the possible adverse affects of mobile technology has on the brain. The benefits mentioned include staying in contact with friends, being able to contact parents in any situation and how it makes them feel grown up.
How often do you use the internet?
The internet is used for a mixture of practical (homework) and entertainment purposes. The average usage is three times a week and the most popular sites are CBBC and gaming sites like CrazyMonkey and Mini Clips for younger children and Piczo and Youtube for the over tens.
What is you favourite TV/radio/film/ book/magazine/computer game?
Classics like the Chronicles of Narnia as well as modern hits like Harry Potter and Tracey Beaker are among the favourite books of the respondents. Top TV shows include Dr Who and Hannah Montana. Kiss radio station is very popular with young girls who love the selection of music played.
What are your favourite shops?
The young girls in the study favourite stores are Primark and Claire’s accessories because of the cheap clothing available. Other popular choices include Woolworths, Game and Game Station and WH Smith.
What are your favourite food and drinks?
Youngsters prefer roast dinners to fast food, though fizzy drinks are far more popular than water or squash.
What healthy foods do you eat?
Interestingly only one respondent mentioned a food other than fruit and vegetables as healthy, which was pasta. Kids are eating fruit on average twice a day and the most popular fruit is apples.
What do you want to be when you grow up?
Traditional careers like teachers and lawyers seem to have been replaced by burning desires to be in the world of entertainment. Kids want to be rich and famous and the career aspirations include being footballers and actors.
What changes would you make if you were Prime Minister for the day?
Kids would be keen to make environmental changes to reduce pollution and cut global warming. Others policies they would introduce would tighten criminal laws and eradicate bullying.
What hobbies do you have and what do you like to do on the weekends?
Top sporting activities are football and swimming and indoor activities include playing computer games and watching TV. Younger children also like to spend time with their family.

Who do you admire the most? The biggest heroes for both young girls and boys are football stars including Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Thierry Henry, followed closely by family members and characters from soaps and TV shows. How do you save and get your money? Kids as young as six are helping out with chores including washing up and hoovering to earn extra money. Regular pocket money seems to be dependent on helping with housework and money from birthdays and Christmas is saved up to buy big items. What do you generally spend your money on? Money is mostly being saved for computer games or games consoles for children under 10 with older children preferring to spend their money on CDs and clothes. |
