On the 6th of May 2023, the United Kingdom will have a new monarch, King Charles III. From the opening procession to the Bank Holiday, the 3-day pageant is said to be taking over the nation. It’s been reported that over 350 million people, worldwide, will tune into the historic ceremony.
But will the country be watching? We wanted to gain opinions when we took to the streets of the home of the event, London, and asked the UK public what they really thought.
We conducted vox pops with a mix of people and it became evident that many had busy schedules and they would not be watching. There was a fair amount of ambivalence towards the monarchy and not much engagement.
There will of course be others who will be getting fully involved in the historical weekend and meeting with family and friends to make an occasion of it.
Nonetheless, what people say is not always what people actually do and it will be extremely interesting to see the reactions of the British public after the event.
While many may say they will be busy getting on with their individual lives now, will they be able to ignore the spectacle when the world’s eyes are on London?
